The Floating Seal, also known as the "floating ring seal," is a compact mechanical face seal specifically designed for low-speed, heavy-duty, and harsh working conditions involving sediment, dust, or muddy water. It boasts a simple structure, excellent wear resistance and vibration resistance, and a long service life.
1. Basic structure

A set consisting of two metal floating seal rings and two rubber O-rings, installed in pairs within the floating seal seat.

• Floating seal ring: made of high-hardness alloy cast iron/tungsten carbide, with precision grinding on the end face, featuring one static and one moving part.

• O-ring: made of oil-resistant rubber (such as nitrile rubber NBR), providing elasticity and static sealing.
II. Working Principle

1. Static sealing: Axial pre-tightening force of the O-ring ensures tight contact between the two ring end faces.

2. Dynamic sealing: During operation, one ring rotates with the shaft while the other remains stationary, forming a micron-level oil film between the end faces for lubrication, wear reduction, and leakage prevention.

3. Automatic compensation: After the end face wears, the O-ring elastically releases, achieving automatic axial compensation to maintain fit; it can slightly float radially to compensate for shaft runout/eccentricity.

4. Dual sealing: The metal ring end face serves as the primary seal, while the O-ring provides the secondary static seal.
III. Core Features

• ❌ High cost: Due to the high manufacturing precision requirements, the unit price is higher than that of ordinary oil seals.

• ❌ Strict installation requirements: The end face is prone to damage, requiring clean and precise assembly.

IV. Typical Applications

Primarily used in rotating parts with low speed, heavy load, and severe pollution:

• Construction machinery: track rollers, drive wheels, sprockets, and planetary reducers for excavators/loaders.

• Mining machinery: shearer/heading machine drum shaft, scraper conveyor head and tail shaft.

• Agricultural machinery: drive hubs for large tractors and harvesters.

• Others: shield machine cutter head, heavy-duty axle, gearbox, etc.

V. Main parameters

• Working pressure: 0~0.2 MPa (dynamic).

• Operating temperature: -40℃~+200℃ (depending on the rubber material).

• Linear speed: ≤5 m/s (applicable for low speeds).

• End face hardness: HRC 60+.
